| BASIC RETRIEVER TRAINING Basic obedience commands of Sit, Here, Heel, Down, Kennel, and Quiet are included in basic training. Once the dog understands all facets of obedience, they are conditioned to the electronic collar. During that time, they are also taught Conditioned Retrieve. The conditioned retrieve is a vital part of training and teaches more than just reliable delivery to hand, it sets the stage for training for the rest of your dogs life. Conditioned retrieve teaches the commands Fetch, Hold, and Drop. During all this, the dog gets plenty of field work!! A dog that has finished Basic Training should be able to sit steady to shot, mark a single and two birds down on land (possibly three) or water and deliver that bird to your side, sit and deliver to hand. The dogs will respond to the whistle, but handling takes place in advance training. These dogs are introduced to gun fire, different types of birds, decoys, holding blinds, duck and goose calls, quartering a field and more. This program takes approximately 3 months to complete, but is highly dependent on the dog. ADVANCED RETRIEVER TRAINING If you are interested in your retriever running in AKC Hunt Tests, AKC Field Trials or just want a world class hunting dog, then this is an option. Advanced training takes the dog from Basics, through transition and into advanced work. Dogs are taught multiple marking skills with diversions, blind interruptions and more. The dog will be taught the skills needed to handle blind retrieves through various handling drills from the simple T to a modified TT, lining drills, pattern fields, poison bird drills and more. An advanced retriever will mark several birds down in the field. They will be able to run multiple blinds on water and land. They will be steady to shot, will honor other working dogs, work out of a holding blind and more. An advanced dog will be ready to run Masters, Qualifying, All-Age (dependent on the dog that is). Rarely will you lose a downed bird with a dog that is through the advanced program. Length of stay is dependent on the dogs learning ability. BREAK-OUT FOR FIELD TRIALS OR HUNT TESTS Taking dogs as young as four months. This may be a great option if your regular pro is full and you are looking for that ‘edge’. Breakout includes obedience, force fetch, collar conditioning, force to pile, casting drills (T and TT), swim-by, decheating, marking skills, handling terrain and more. Call for availability. HANDLER/TRAINER EDUCATION I encourage everyone to come on out and day train. I will spend as much time as I can teaching and showing. I have two of my own all-age dogs that I allow handlers to run to increase the education experience. I also encourage handlers to run other dogs on the truck, it expands the dogs ability to work for more than one person. If you are new to dog training and field games, WELCOME! Come on out and see what it's all about. Currently there is no charge for day training, but you may be asked to throw or shoot some birds. OBEDIENCE ONLY Is your retriever driving you NUTS? Feel like you're on an episode of "It's Me or The Dog"? Then you've come to the right place! I now have space available for dogs wanting only obedience work. Obedience includes RELIABLE Sit, Heel, Here/Come, Down, Kennel, Quiet. 30 days of training available, private lessons at your house included once the dog is through the program. HANDLING FOR AKC HUNT TESTS and AKC FIELD TRIALS All levels all stakes (except Amateur of course). Reserved for dogs in training or who have had prior training at Blacktail Labradors. Some exceptions may apply for day training dogs. PUPPY RAISING For many folks, raising a puppy can be a difficult task. Sometimes you just don't have time for puppy. | So How Much Does It Cost? Monthly Training Fees $500.00 Birds (live) Pigeons $4.00 Ducks $12.00 Pheasants $15.00 Handling Fees - $30 - $50 depending on stake/event Day Training - Currently no charge I exclusively feed and recommend Black Gold dog food. I spent many hours and days researching dog food before making this decision. If you would like a different food, you can supply your own. Owners are responsible for the cost of any special diets, medications (such as frontline and heartguard, which are required in the spring and summer) and any veterinary care charges that may occur. I am fortunate to live only blocks away from an animal hospital that has a 24 hour on-call care. I have a lengthy and fantastic relationship with the vets and vet techs at the Amherst Animal Hospital. Since I only take 4 - 5 dogs at a time, I require a $250.00 non-refundable deposit to hold a spot for your dog. This is applied to your first month of training. Due to high training demand, a 3 month contract is required for all new dogs coming to Blacktail. A 2 week trial period is available. Aggressive dogs will NOT be tolerated. If your dog shows any signs of aggression towards other dogs or people, he/she will be sent home immediately. Your dog may be held responsible for ALL costs associated with his/her aggression including but not limited to veterinary and hospital fees, property damage, off property boarding, transportation fees to return dog, etc. References available upon request.
